Bio
This is an in character journal for Bryony Olivia Kavanagh, a character on Hogwarts Express MUSH. She's from an upper middle class wizarding family with claims to pureblood heritage. She's the daughter of Rourke and Francine Kavanagh, and she grew up outside of Porlock, Somerset, England. She's prim, proper, classy ... but only on the outside. ;)

She's currently seventeen years old and in her final year at Hogwarts. Slytherin, of course. Is there anywhere else her family would have let her go?

History:
The magical Kavanaghs of Ireland have been magical as long as anyone can tell. The Kavanaghs of Porlock in Somerset, England, have been magical ever since they split from the Irish Kavanaghs. They’ve also been pretty wealthy for those years. They take pride in being pureblooded (or mostly so) and have a proud tradition of being Slytherin (or predominantly so).

The latest head-of-household is Rourke. His wife, Francine, is from another well-to-do wizarding family of Exmoor, the Melmouths, living in Malmsmead. The Melmouths tend to be more ‘mixed’ than ‘pureblood’. The couple have five children: Falkner, Bryony, Philippa, Maurice and Dymphna. Rumor has it that Rourke married Francine for three things: her good looks, her family name and her training to become an apothecary. It was said to be a convenient match for both families. Had his wife not been an apothecary, he probably would not have become the head-of-household. He wanted nothing to do with the apothecary business; instead, he works for the Department of Experimental Charms in Experimental Weaponry.

Falkner and Bryony were born two years apart. Four years after Bryony came Philippa, and four years after that came Maurice. Two years after Maurice, Dymphna was born. All five children grew up with their days spent between the house and one of the apothecary shops in the UK, which are all run by various branches of the Kavanagh family. Their mother and one of their aunts are apothecaries. The Kavanaghs have a chain of shops located in a variety of wizarding hot spots around the world, run by Kavanagh apothecaries and family friends or business associates. The shop in London is perhaps the best stocked. Many of the herbs stocked in all of the shops are grown on Kavanagh lands.

What all does this have to do with Bryony, you may ask? Well, her early years spent in the apothecary have influenced her throughout her life. She has, in her time at Hogwarts, excelled particularly in potions and herbology. (She has also tended to excel in charms as well, probably because father receives an owl every time there’s a problem). Bryony and her siblings grew up fetching ingredients (the non-dangerous sort) or books for their mother or aunt. More often than not, one or the other would explain what was going on and why they used the ingredients they did. Certainly, the children generally didn’t always pay attention, but repetition will tend to stick anything in your head.

Bryony’s first exhibition of magic didn’t come in the apothecary shop, however. One warm summer day when she was five, she was enjoying a cup of juice and Falkner, her elder brother, scared her. The juice spilled over the front of her most favorite sun dress. Well, she started crying and the tears as they splashed onto the stain began washing it away. Any reprimands for Falkner went unsaid as Francine realized that her daughter’s tears had washed away spots of the stain. She performed a quick cleaning charm to clean up the rest of the mess.

Despite instances like that from Falkner, Bryony and he were particularly close as children. Falkner going off to school was somewhat rough on Bryony, who had to resort to companionship with her sister, Philippa, or her cousins. In the end, she kept mostly to herself and opted instead for books. She developed a fondness for poetry and classical Muggle literature. To this day, she can likely be found reading poetry or books in what little spare time she has.

At eleven she received her Hogwarts letter, and off she went to school. She was sorted, rightly enough, into Slytherin. She developed few friendships in her early years, opting for those friendships she did have with older members of her House. The fellow students of her own year she treated with aloofness, although it’s unlikely anyone has ever heard her say a directly unkind word towards someone. Those in her year and some younger have been prone to saying behind her back that she “only has two friends: books and studies.” Not being named female prefect for her year came as something of a blow, but not something that ultimately bothered her long term. She merely put her nose to the grindstone and studied for her O.W.L.s. She received 5 O’s, 3 E’s and 1 A. Incidentally, the O’s were in the subjects she would need to take for N.E.W.T.’s so she might study to become an apothecary.
